Riding solo (one small step, episode 2) follows Elspeth Beard, the first British woman to ride her motorbike around the world.
For Elspeth, motorbikes started as a mode of transport around London, and developed into a lifelong passion. During her first big bike trip, coast-to-coast of the US, an idea crossed her mind. What if I rode my bike across the world? Wouldn't it be amazing? Is it even possible? It was the early 1980s, well before the internet and social media. The world was a far less connected place.
Elspeth set out on her round-the-world trip, going back across America, onto New Zealand and Australia, before continuing across Asia and Europe, and eventually returning home. Along the way she navigated through severe weather conditions, near-death accidents, intense loneliness, cultural challenges, and war zones. She also experienced a wide array of natural beauty, met some incredible likeminded people, and developed an unshakeable self-belief as she sought to achieve this incredible achievement.
Elspeth talks through the highs and lows of the journey, and all the exciting and challenging things that happened along the way. She explains how she went about such an audacious mission, and how she kept herself motivated when things seemed insurmountable.
And finally she gives her advice to others looking to go after their dreams. 'One small step' is a docuseries following ordinary people who've achieved extraordinary things highlighting the small steps that got them there. Often we see the results of hard work, but rarely do we find out what it took to achieve greatness.
